Butterfly Bingo Dotter Symmetry Fun and a FREEBIE

Last week I shared photos of my sweet young friends creating butterfly window decorations using the wax from discarded crayons. I also seized the opportunity to teach symmetry and apply the concept by decorating butterflies with bingo dotters. The project was SUPER SIMPLE and I am so happy to walk you through it now.

First off, you will need to download and trace a butterfly template onto construction paper that has been folded in half. Just place the template along the folded seam and trace along both lines on the template.

Keep the paper folded in half and cut out the butterfly. This can be tricky for students that struggle with spatial thinking, but it is a great experience for young learners.

We used the frame for our window decorations and saved the butterfly shape for this project. This little lady used several colors of bingo dotters to decorate both wings of the butterfly. She may only be 5 years old, but she caught right on to the concept. Look at those beautiful matching wings!

As a fun follow-up to this project, we worked on color words and number recognition with my Color By Number butterfly. This little coloring page is simple and engaging for young students. And it’s FREE! Click the image below to download your free printable.

Hi, I'm Maria.

I’m a former kindergarten teacher turned work-from-home mom. I still love sharing ideas and resources to make teaching easier, so you can focus on what really matters in the classroom. When I’m not working on the blog, you’ll find me chasing kids around the house with a cold cup of coffee in my hand (some things never change even once you’re out of the classroom!)
