Description

You will love this engaging low-prep activity to practice decomposing numbers with subtraction! This set of 4 interactive worksheets is designed to help students develop the skill of subtracting to decompose numbers 2, 3, 5 and 6 using 1-inch paper tiles or dot markers as they illustrate all of the ways to break apart a given number. Provide your students with hands-on practice with subtracting to decompose.

How it works: On each activity page, students will glue paper squares into each string of boxes, then write an “X” on some paper squares to show which squares are being subtracted to create different methods of breaking a number apart, and then record the corresponding subtraction sentence beside each tile creation. (Dot markers are a great alternative to use if you don’t have paper squares on-hand or are short on time).

Your young learners will enjoy this visual for breaking down numbers. Help deepen your students’ understanding and strengthen their number sense skills with this decomposition review. Great to use an anchor chart with the whole class, or in small groups.

Great for:
⭐️ math centers
⭐️ stations
⭐️ whole group lessons
⭐️ anchor charts
⭐️ morning work
⭐️ early finisher tasks

Please Note: These PDFs are legal-size (8.5″x14″) documents. Before printing, you will probably need to go File -> Print Setup and adjust your print settings to “legal” size paper.

This activity was specifically designed for Common Core standard K.OA.3 (Decompose Numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation)
